Far too often, the emphasis on reducing or eliminating fat from the menu is brought to the forefront.

It makes a certain amount of sense. After all, a gram of protein or carbohydrates supplies 4 calories, while a single gram of fat offers up 9 calories.

Simple math might easily lead you to believe fat is the enemy.

Further investigation tells a different story.

Fat, like every nutrient humans consume, has a vital and impacting role to play in a healthy body.

Before you decide to pull the plug on fat, consider just how important fat is in your overall health.

 1) Fat Lubricates Your Body

It helps to moisturize the skin. It is the vehicle needed to deliver fat-soluble vitamins throughout the body.

Fat helps the brain in the transmission of signals to the body. There is no part of the body that doesn’t need fat for optimal functioning.

 2) Fat Is An Insulator

It keeps you warm and it cushions your organs. It provides materials for cell membrane structure. It helps your blood to clot, your muscles to flex, and your body to fight inflammation. It is part of every building block in a healthy body.

3) Fat vs Sugar

Contrary to popular belief, dietary fat is not the culprit in your expanding waistline. The real culprit there is sugar. Unfortunately, sugar does not have any redeeming health benefits to justify its existence — unless, of course, you consider your favorite chocolate bar to be an aid in your mental health.

4) Fat Fills You Up

Low-fat or fat-free foods will still give you calories but without the satisfaction of a full stomach.

That empty feeling will eventually lead to a binge meal that sabotages every healthy effort. The sooner you feel the effect of satiation, the sooner you will stop eating.

Vegetables, fish, and nuts are excellent sources of unsaturated fats. These foods also boast a host of other nutrients you won’t find in that fat-free cookie.

Fat is a vital part of a healthy diet, but not all fats are equal in terms of what they offer.

Monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and omega-3 fatty acids are the healthiest options. Saturated and trans fats are the ones you should monitor and keep to a minimum.

Eliminating all fat in the diet is not the answer to the question of how to follow a healthier diet.

Managing your intake and knowing which fats help your body and which fats might clog your arteries will take you to the results you want.
